The studentship is part of an ongoing research programme that addresses the specific needs of major road and rail infrastructure owners across Europe in respect of the masonry arch bridge infrastructure. The project will be largely laboratory based, developing deeper understanding of the long-term deterioration process of masonry and developing a database for the key failure modes for masonry bridges. The student will be expected to interact with European bridge owners, gather information and put together guidance notes and case studies for the use of the industry. The output will feed directly into the knowledgebase and bridge assessment/management procedures of European railway owners.

Eligibility:
i. A first class or upper second class honours degree in civil/structural engineering or relevant discipline. Candidates would normally be expected to hold a Masters degree in a relevant area.
ii. Ability to be self-motivated, well-organised and work independently
iii. Good analytical and technical skills
iv. Ability to carry out laboratory work independently
