CALL FOR APPLICATIONS for 2014 PhD STUDENTSHIP
The SABINA network is funded under the Carnegie-IAS Regional Initiative in Science and Education (RISE) is inviting application from prospective students who are citizens or permanent residents of Tanzania, Malawi, Namibia or South Africa and who are interested in studying towards MSc and PhD degrees. Women applicants are encouraged to apply. The SABINA scholarship covers tuition fees, a student bursary/stipend and research costs. Applications will be submitted till 30 September 2013.
Eligibility:
Applications are invited from prospective students who are citizens or permanent residents of Tanzania, Malawi, Namibia or South Africa and who are interested in studying towards MSc and PhD degrees in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology/functional genomics, synthetic chemistry and bioinformatics of natural products; or food science.
-Female candidates are strongly encouraged to participate in this regional initiative.
-Candidates who are already in the employment of an academic or research institution in one of the partner countries and wish to upgrade their qualifications will be favorably considered.
-Candidates should have appropriate qualifications (at least equivalent to a credit pass (60%) rate) with specialization in at least one of the following fields: Natural product chemistry, Synthetic chemistry, Biochemistry, Food science and Bioinformatics.
-Applicants should give an indication of their preferred field of study.
Duration of award(s):
Scholarships will be awarded for a full calendar year or for half a year depending on the date of registration of the student and the period for which the bursary is required. To qualify for a full year’s scholarship, students should register before March 2014. Scholarships are awarded up to two years for master course and up to three years for doctoral course.
What does it cover? The SABINA scholarship covers tuition fees, a student bursary/stipend and research costs. The total grant comprises of
1. A bursary/stipend paid to the student; to cover accommodation/subsistence costs during the study, as well as working visits to network institutions.
2. Tuition fees, paid by the network to the University where the student is registered.
3. A contribution to research costs, paid to the main supervisor of the student.
Bursary/Stipend: Masters 1 year- $8 000 and 2 year- $9 000; Doctoral 1 year- $12 000, 2 year- $13 500 and 3 year- $14 5.
