Experimental Particle Physics PhD Studentship at Stockholm University Sweden

PhD Studentship in Experimental Particle Physics at the Department of Physics, Stockholm University in Sweden,Experimental particle physics has entered a new and exciting era. Over a period of more than 20 years researchers at the international laboratory CERN in Geneva designed and built the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The LHC is now providing the world’s highest energy collisions.

The ATLAS experiment analyses the debris from proton-proton collisions at the LHC with the aim of investigating open questions in modern physics such as the hierarchy problem with the Higgs boson mass, what is dark matter made of, how is the observed pattern of elementary particles generated, why is the universe dominated by matter rather than anti-matter. The Stockholm University group is active in the ATLAS experiment, one of the two largest LHC experiments.

The group has participated in the construction of components of the ATLAS detector and we maintain a responsibility for maintaining and calibrating these devices. Concerning physics analysis the group is playing a leading role in searches for signatures of hitherto unseen particles and physics processes which are not predicted within the Standard Model of particle physics. Such particles are predicted within a number of theories such as supersymmetry and could account for the Dark Matter of the Universe.

Medical Biochemistry PhD Position Uppsala University Sweden

PhD Position in Medical Biochemistry at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology in Uppsala University, We seek one highly motivated individual with a strong interest in pursuing a PhD degree in medical biochemistry with specialization in tumor biology and within a research program at UppsalaUniversity. The project focuses on the signal transduction pathways of transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta) and liver kinase B1 (LKB1), with the central aim to understand physiological processes that implicate the two pathways and which control the capacity of tumor cells to differentiate and invade its microenvironment.

Tranforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta) and LKB1 guide major tumor suppressor pathways in a variety of human tissues. Our laboratory has established mechanisms of crosstalk between these pathways in regulation of cell proliferation, invasion and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). LKB1 acts directly on specific members of the Smad family that transmits TGFbeta signals. LKB1 also acts by activating the kinase activity of the AMP-regulated kinase family (AMPK), members of which are the salt-inducible kinase (SIK) and Nuak2. The new project will attempt to explain how LKB1 functions via SIK and Nuak2 activation to regulate TGFbeta signaling, epithelial cell polarity and protein synthesis.
